Switzerland’s Michel Aebischer scored a worldie to double his side’s lead against Hungary in UEFA Euro 2024. T he Swiss kick-started their European Championship campaign by defeating Hungarians 3-1 in a clinical performance at the Cologne Stadium. With this victory, Granit Xhaka’s men are second in Group A behind hosts Germany after their 5-1 bashing of Scotland.
From the opening whistle, Switzerland seemed like the better team with an experienced group of players and drew first blood thanks to a clinical opening goal by Kwadwo Duah from Michel Aebischer’s assist at the 12-minute mark.
Then towards the half-time Aebischer showed off his class to double the Swiss lead. The 27-year-old was set up by his Bologna club-mate Remo Freuler outside the Hungary box where he steadied himself and attempted a curling strike that beat the despairing dive of Hungary’s Peter Gulacsi.
In the second half, Hungary managed to cut short the Swiss lead thanks to Barnabas Varga’s diving header in the 66th off Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross. Immediately after scoring the goal, the Hungarians brought out a different intensity and kept Switerzland in check.
Then in stoppage time, star striker Breel Embolo smashed the third Swiss goal to seal an incredible win. With this defeat, Hungary suffered its first loss in a competitive game since September 2022. Switzerland will be up against Steve Clarke’s Scotland on Wednesday before the latter face Hungary next Sunday.
