Capping off his 1988 historic campaign individually and for the Netherlands, the legendary Marco Van Basten scored arguably the greatest goal in Euro history. After scoring four goals in an inspiring run to the final, Van Basten smashed a brilliant volley from an acute angle to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead which was enough for them to lift to the title.
Paul Gascoigne (England) vs Scotland – 1996
One of the most iconic players from the 90s, England legend Paul Gascoigne scored one of the best goals in footballing history. Playing in a home Euros, the Three Lions were among the favourites to win it all but were knocked out in the quarter-finals. Despite this early exit, Gascoigne against Scotland gave the fans a moment to cherish as received the ball in the box which flicked up over the defender before volleying at the back of the net in spectacular fashion.
Ronnie Whelan (Ireland) vs Soviet Union – 1988
In the group stages of Euro 1988, Ronnie Whelan produced a moment of sheer magic that is etched into Irish football folklore. Facing the dominant Soviet Union, the Republic of Ireland found brilliance from a regular throw-in. Around the 38-minute mark, Mick McCarthy sent out a long throw-in which rebounded off a few players bounced over the Soviet box. Here Whelan met the ball in mid-air and then stunningly smashed into the goal.
Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland) vs Poland – 2016
In the Round of 16 of Euro 2016, Xherdan Shaqiri produced one of the most memorable goals of the tournament history. Switzerland were trailing Poland 1-0 when Shaqiri stepped up in the 82nd minute to level the score. As the ball, bounced towards the top of the Polish box, Xherdan Shaqiri executed an acrobatic bicycle kick to perfection.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden) vs Italy – 2004
In the group stage of Euro 2004, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a brilliant goal with his manic flair and athleticism. Sweden was 1-0 down against Italy when a corner kick led to chaos in the Italian penalty area where the ball was partially cleared and then lofted back towards the goal. Here Ibra showcased his incredible athleticism hitting the perfect backheel volley while facing away from the goal. The ball sailed over the defenders and the goalkeeper over the Azzuri defender to leave the score in a magical manner.
