The T20 World Cup 2024 is near completion of the group stage. After 38 matches in the marquee tournament, the top eight teams from the four groups have progressed to the round two, that is the Super 8 and Bangladesh were the last team to confirm their spot in the final eight.
On Monday, June 17, Bangladesh beat Nepal by 21 runs to progress further. However, they finished second in the Group D standings after South Africa, their final group stage match caught eyeballs when one of their batters consulted for taking a review. The incident occurred in the 14th over when Sandeep Lamichhane was in the attack. The leg spinner struck Tanzim Hasan Sakib on the pad and the on-field umpire was quick to raise his finger and signal out.
Although, the pacer took the walk back to the dressing room, but his partner, Jaker Ali, who was at the non-striker’s end was spotted consulting the Bangladesh dressing room, video of which is going viral. Although the replays showed that the ball was missing the stumps and the on-field umpire had to overturn his decision, the pacer’s stay in the middle was short-lived as he was dismissed on the very next delivery.

As per ICC’s rulebook, the umpire can turn down the request for a player review if he is found seeking assistance from outside. “If the on-field umpires believe that the captain or either batter has received direct or indirect input emanating other than from the players on the field, then they may at their discretion decline the request for a Player Review. In particular, signals from the dressing room must not be given,” the ICC rule states.
Moreover, the ICC Code of Conduct also prohibits a player from seeking help from any member off the pitch and it may attract punishment. Although the ICC is yet to make a call on this incident and if found guilty, both Sakib and Jaker Ali can receive suspension or fine.
