The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to rope in a new head coach for the Indian men’s senior team as former Indian cricketer turned head coach, Rahul Dravid’s tenure comes to an end with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. However, the BCCI invited applications for the head coach role during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the final call is still to be taken.
However, reports have revealed that former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir is the only candidate to have applied for the post. Moreover, according to reports published by The Indian Express, Gambhir will appear for an interview before the Cricket Advisory Committee over a Zoom call on Tuesday, June 18.
“We are conducting an interview session for candidates for the post of head coach and selector. The CAC will submit its recommendation to the BCCI and the board will make an official announcement thereafter,” a BCCI source confirmed as quoted in The Indian Express.
It is being further reported that the CAC will also conduct interviews for the Selector’s post, who will replace Salil Ankola. If reports are to be believed, Ankola and Ajit Agarkar are both from the West Zone and the Committee is likely to pick the new selector from the North Zone. Ajit Agarkar, the former Indian cricketer replaced Chetan Sharma in July last year after the latter stepped down following a sting operation.
The Indian cricket board had listed down the requirements for the head coach post while opening the application. In their official statement, the BCCI stated, the candidate “must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes” and they should help in “developing a world-class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game.”
Furthermore, it is to be noted that the next head coach will begin his stint in July 2024, which will stretch until the ODI World Cup, set to take place in December 2027.
