On Monday, June 24, Australia registered back-to-back losses in the T20 World Cup 2024. After suffering a thumping defeat against Afghanistan in the Super 8s, the Mitchell Marsh-led side went down against India and eventually were knocked out of the tournament after Afghanistan beat Bangladesh, early this morning.
With Afghanistan’s win, David Warner’s career in T20Is also ended. The Australian veteran, Warner, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 had confirmed that it will be his last after he called off his curtains to his Test and ODI career. After the Aussies were knocked out of the tournament, Warner’s T20I career also ended.
Although, the veteran hasn’t dropped any comment on the same, his compatriot Josh Hazlewood, during his address in the press conference stated that they are getting used to it. Although he also added that Warner will be missed, but they still wait for a statement from him.
“Nothing’s been said yet. It might be said after this [press conference] before the [evening] game, but I think we’ll wait until after the game and then we’ll [acknowledge] the career that’s been. It’s been unbelievable. We’ll definitely miss him around the group, out in the field and off-field – an amazing all-format career,” Hazlewood said.
“We’ve had a little taste of it. It’s sort of been a slow burn with Test cricket and ODI cricket, and now T20. Life without him, we’ve sort of gotten used to it a little bit in New Zealand. It’s always different when you lose a player that’s been there for so long. But we’ll move on and push forward,” Hazlewood added.
The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia were unbeaten in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 and finished at the top of the Group B standings, ahead of the likes of England. However, they continued their winning run in the Super 8 as they defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs by DLS method. But their fate took a different turn as they lost to Afghanistan and then India and eventually ended their campaign in the tournament.
