On Tuesday, June 25, Afghanistan locked horns with Bangladesh in the final Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent. The Rashid Khan-led side, who earlier beat Australia, registering a massive upset in the marquee tournament, were in the semifinals race and finally sealed the berth, knocking out the former champions.
Afghanistan, after winning the toss, opted to bat first and scored 115 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran gave a crucial start with the former scoring 55-ball 43. A 10-ball 19 from skipper Rashid Khan helped them get to a decent score on the board. During Rashid Khan’s inning in the middle, the skipper was seen taking out his frustration when Karim Janat denied him a double.
The incident took place in the final over of the inning as Rashid Khan attempted to play the helicopter shot, trying to hit for a six. Although the ball hardly went the distance, Rashid quickly went for a single and was keen to take a double but his batting pair Karim Janat denied the call. Seeing this, the Afghan all-rounder was seen furious and threw his bat in frustration.
Speaking of the match, the Afghan Atalans clinched a convincing 8-run win in a rain reduced match against Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent. They successfully defended the 116-run target as they bundled out the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side in 17.5 overs to knock them out of the tournament.
Afghanistan will next take on South Africa, who are on an unbeaten streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the first semifinal at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad on Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 am IST.
