SportsTiger’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Team of the Tournament

The 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ended with India being crowned as the T20 world champions for the second time. The team, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and Rahul Dravid’s guidance, edged past South Africa to lift the T20 silverware after 17 long years and end their ICC trophy drought after 11 years. This was Sharma’s third consecutive ICC final in last 13 months or so. 

The tournament saw several players stepping up for their respective roles and giving in their best shot to help the side get over the line. All 20 teams that participated in the edition had a few names, who outshone rest of their teammates and delivered hero-like performances.

As curtains came down on the thrilling and exciting month-long contest, SportsTiger brings to you the team of the tournament. 

Openers: Rohit Sharma (C), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk)

Former India T20I captain Rohit Sharma was in his red-hot form this year, and delivered exactly where it was needed the most. The talisman batter came up with 257 runs averaging at 36.71 and strike rate of 156.70. In eight innings, Sharma hit 15 massive sixes and ensured the team got off to flying start. Afghanistan’s batting star Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit three fifties and came up with a total of 281 runs with an average of 35.12 and strike rate of 124.33. 

Middle Order: Suryakumar Yadav, Nicholas Pooran, Heinrich Klaasen

One of the best T20I batters, Suryakumar Yadav scored 199 runs with an average of 28.42 and a strike rate of 135 in the season. He came up with two half centuries along with a crucial knock against England in the semi-finals. Nicholas Pooran hit 228 runs with an average of 38 and a strike rate of 146.15, and became the only batter from West Indies to score more than 150 runs for the side.  On the other hand, South Africa’s Heinrich Klassen came up with 190 runs for the side with a strike rate of 126.66. During the final clash against India, Klassen played a crucial knock of 52 runs

All-Rounders: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Rashid Khan

Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya made a strong comeback and delivered some of the most impactful performances in the T20 World Cup 2024. In 8 matches, Pandya scored 144 runs with a strike rate of 151.57 and scalped 11 wickets with an economy rate of 7.64. His fellow all-rounder Axar Patel, on the other hand, scalped nine wickets at an economy rate of 7.86. In the final, he played a match-turning knock of 47 runs with the bat after India were reduced to 34/3. Talking about Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan, he picked 14 wickets, the second most for the team. In the Super 8 clash against Australia, he came up with 10-ball 19 to help the side edge out their rivals. 

Tailenders: Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Fazalhaq Farooqi

India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh had a memorable campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024, where he equalled the record for the most wickets taken in a single edition of the marquee tournament. After dismissing Quinton de Kock in the final, Singh achieved the feat as he picked his 17th wicket. Jasprit Bumrah who emerged as the silver lining for the team in difficult times, ended the campaign with 15 wickets to his name with an economy rate of 4.17. 

Bumrah produced magic moments whenever India needed them and won the Player of the Tournament award. Apart from them, Fazalhaq Farooqi booked his well-deserved spot in the squad with his 17 wickets, and ended up as the highest wicket-taker with Arshdeep in the T20 World Cup. In games against New Zealand and India, Farooqi registered figures of 4-17 and 3-33, respectively.
