In ODI cricket history, we have seen several high-scoring matches throughout the years, where the teams even chased some of the highest scores. Usually, a score above 280 is considered a challenging or even a match-winning total in ODI. However, there have been multiple occasions where the teams have even chased a 350+ target in the 50-over format.

The fifth spot in the list belongs to the Indian team that pulled off a 360-run chase against Australia at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on 16th October 2013. In reply to Australia’s 359 for 5, India had a fiery start with Rohit Sharma (141* off 123) and Shikhar Dhawan (95 off 86) putting up 176 runs for the first wicket. After that, Virat Kohli took charge along with Rohit and smashed the fastest ODI hundred for India as India chased the winning total in 43.3 overs with 9 wickets in hand.

England pulled off their highest successful run chase in ODIs the same year they clinched their maiden ODI World Cup, as they chased 361 runs against West Indies at Kensington Oval, Barbados on 20th February 2019. Batting first, Chris Gayle’s 135 off 129 balls took West Indies to a mammoth total of 360 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. In reply, England got two centurions in the form of Jason Roy (123 off 85) and Joe Root (102 off 97) who laid the foundation for England’s historic win as the hosts chased the winning total in 48.4 overs losing 4 wickets.

South Africa pulled off their second-highest successful run chase in ODI which came against Australia at Kingsmead, Durban on 5th October 2016. Batting first, Australia posted 371/6 with David Warner and Steve Smith scoring tons. In reply, David Miller played a match-winning knock of 118 runs off 79 balls for the Proteas as they chased the winning total in 49.2 overs losing six wickets.

This was the time when the Netherlands stunned the two-time ODI World Cup Champions West Indies and knocked them out of the 2023 ODI World Cup during the ICC World Cup Qualifier fixture at Takashinga Sports Club, Harare on 26th June 2023. Replying to the mammoth total of 375/6 by the Windies, the Netherlands also gave a tough fight and ended up putting up the same total after losing 9 wickets in their 50 overs. After that, the Netherlands defeated the West Indies in the Super Over and qualified for the ODI World Cup in India that year.

Herschelle Gibbs turned out to be a hero when South Africa achieved the highest successful chase in the ODIs, just a few hours after Australia posted their highest total in the format at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on 12th March, 2006. The Aussies posted a mammoth 434/4 in their 50 overs with the skipper Ricky Ponting 164 runs off 105 balls. In reply, Gibbs scored 175 runs off 111 balls along with Gream Smith’s 90 off 55. At last, Proteas pulled off a historic run chase with one ball to spare and one wicket remaining.
