Avinash Sable breaks national record at Paris Diamond League; Kishore Jena finishes eighth

India’s Avinash Sable on Sunday, July 7 broke the national record in 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League. Sable, who finished with a timing of 8:09.91 broke his own record, setting his new personal best. Earlier, the Indian athlete had registered his personal best of 8:11.20 in the 3000m steeplechase. 

While he clocked his personal best, it was also Sable’s first ever 8:10-minute run in the event, seeing the 2024 Paris Olympics ahead. Although, the Indian premier runner finished sixth at the Paris Diamond League, he had a neck-and-neck battle with fourth placed Amin Mohamed and fifth placed Goerdie Beaming. Moreover, Ethiopia’s Abrham Sime finished tied with Kenya’s Amos Serem for the top two positions.

On the other hand, Sable’s Indian compatriot, Kishore Jena, continued his struggles as he finished eighth with an effort of 78.10m. His dismal performance followed his personal best throw of 87.54m and season best throw of 80.84m while winning the bronze at the National Inter-State Championships. 

Moreover, the event which did not feature India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra, saw Germany’s Julian Weber finish at first place with his throw of 85.91m. Although, Weber’s best throw came in his fifth attempt to clinch the gold, Grenada’s Anderson Peters settled for a silver while Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic secured the third place.
