Martin Guptill indirectly slams MS Dhoni fans 5 years after World Cup semi-final run out

Former New Zealand top-order batter Martin Guptill took an indirect dig at fans of MS Dhoni as he shared pictures of his iconic run out from the ODI World Cup 2019 semi-final. The Blackcaps defeated Team India in a thrilling game which split over into a reserve day. After batting first, the Kiwis posted a total of 239-8 with Ross Taylor top-scoring with a 90-ball 74.

Then in the second innings, the Men in Blue got off to a dismal start as they were reduced to 24-4 in 9.6 overs. But a few cameos from Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya got India back into the contest. Then MS Dhoni with Ravindra Jadeja stitched up a vital stand as the Indian team was nearing a famous win.

But an incredible run out in the penultimate over by Martin Guptill dismissed Dhoni and turned the game in New Zealand’s favour. Five years after that moment, the Kiwi opener took to Instagram to share a picture of that run-out and stated he realized why was getting hate today.  “Figured out why I’m getting so much hate today,” Martin Guptill captioned the story.

Recalling that run-out in an interview with Hindustan Times, Martin Guptill described as a lucky moment. He said,  “It’s one of those things that happened so quickly in the moment. All I remember was I saw the ball go up and I then I thought, oh no, it’s coming sort of more towards me.”

“So I put the skates on to get on with that run. I knew there was no chance of a throw at the stumps, but I just tried to have a shot and only had one and a half stumps to aim at and I just got lucky. The stars aligned, and it was a perfect throw.”
