Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Delhi Capitals on Saturday, July 13 confirmed of parting ways with their long-time head coach and former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting. Ponting was appointed as the DC coach in 2018, and the franchise will look to appoint a new head coach, seeing the IPL mega auction, set to take place later this year.
However, ahead of it, DC Director of Cricket Operations and former India captain and BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on who could fill in Ponting’s shoes. While speaking with Aajkaal, a Bengali newspaper, Ganguly dropped a massive hint on who could it be or whether he will fulfill the Head Coach duties. “I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, and hence I have started planning from now on,” Ganguly began.
I will be the head coach: Sourav Ganguly breaks silence on DC Head Coach
“Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years. I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches,” Ganguly said in an interview with the Bengali newspaper. When asked about who can replace Ponting as the next Delhi Capitals head coach, Ganguly said that there is a chance that he can take up the coaching responsibilities. “I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform. Will need to recruit some new players,” he said.
Ganguly also confirmed that Pravin Amre, the former India cricketer, is set to continue with DC as Assistant Coach. Moreover, a decision on DC’s head coach is likely to come at the end of this month or early next month as the DC co-owners are scheduled to meet.
