Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lanka captain, turned heads last month by playing village cricket for Shillingstone versus Kingston Lacy CC in Dorset, England. On Monday, July 15, Rajasthan Royals took to their official X account to post an interview about the special moment for their head coach Kumar Sangakkara, wherein he directly addressed Yuzvendra Chahal to fulfill his promise of sending him some SG kits.
Notably, during his third division outing for Shillingstone, Kumar Sangakkara scored 68 off 50 against Kingston Lacy CC before John Burns cleaned him up. He also went on to bowl for the club, registering figures of 1/32 in seven overs.
In the interview posted by Rajasthan Royals on X, Kumar Sangakkara spoke about Sanju Samson, the captain of the team, giving him two of his bats in a kind gesture. He said, “In my village cricket, I have two of Sanju’s bats. He was very kind to give me two of his bats because I have no memorabilia, no bats lying around the house, nothing. So I had to start from scratch.”
Kumar Sangakkara also addressed the leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, another member of Rajasthan Royals, reminding him about the promise to send cricket kits. “Yuzi, if you’re watching this Yuzi, remember you promised me some SG kits so I’m waiting for that as well. But it’s been a year of great fun. There’s a great feeling of community playing village cricket in Dorset, where I live. And it’s been great fun and yeah, Sanju’s bats,” remarked the Sri Lankan great.
Moreover, in the IPL 2024, Rajasthan Royals reached Qualifier 2, which they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In the league stage, RR finished in second place after a memorable start to the 2024 season, winning eight out of the first nine matches.
