Suryakumar Yadav unlikely to play ODIs in near future for India; here’s why

Top ranked Indian batter, Suryakumar Yadav shook the world after he outrun all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the race to succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain. The Mumbai batter will commence his T20I captaincy in the upcoming Sri Lanka series, which gets underway on July 27 in Pallekele.

However, he must have consolidated his place in the shortest format of the game, his future in the 50-over format still hangs under clouds. Recently, India’s Chief Selector, Ajit Agarkar, during his media address also spoke of Suryakumar’s role and what his future looks like in the Indian cricket team.

“No we haven’t discussed Surya at this point in ODI. Shreyas (Iyer) is back, KL (Rahul) is back, they’ve had a great (ODI) World Cup. Rishabh (Pant) is back well so there is some real quality through that middle order. At this point, Surya is a T20I player,” Ajit Agarkar said in the presser.

Rishabh Pant is our priority keeper across formats: Gautam Gambhir

The former India cricketer turned head coach, Gautam Gambhir showed his confidence as India’s key wicketkeeper across formats. Pant, who made his return to cricket in March during the IPL after surviving the horrific crash in December 2022, was recently seen at the T20 World Cup 2024.

“Rishabh Pant is our first priority keeper across all formats, we don’t listen to outside noises,” Gautam Gambhir said during the media address. Moreover, Ajit Agarkar also assured Pant’s role in the side adding, “Rishabh has been out for a long time. We need to get him back to playing. That’s the first thing. We don’t want to burden someone who is coming back after a year out of the game.”
