Tokyo Olympics silver medalist and Wimbledon 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics 2024 . Explaining this decision, the Czechnian cited an injury to her hand which is set to keep her out of action for the quadrennial event in Paris. The last few weeks haven’t been great for Marketa Vondrousova as she was eliminated in the opening round of Wimbledon 2024.
The defending champion was defeated by unseeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets (4-6, 2-6) in an hour and 7 minutes. Vondrousova joined tennis legend Steffi Graff to be a defending champion who was eliminated in the opening round of the women’s singles competition at Wimbledon. Before the Championships, the Czech international suffered an early exit at the Berlin Open due to injury.

Regarding the Paris Olympics, Marketa Vondrousova released a statement on social media stating, “I am very sorry, but due to health reasons, I will not be participating in this year’s Olympic Games in Paris. I hoped until the last moment that it could go at least in a double, but the hand problems do not let me go on the court. I’m concentrating now to be okay at the US Open, I will keep my fingers crossed for all Czech representatives in France from a distance. Hopefully soon on the court.”
Like Marketa Vondrousova, Defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from the Paris Olympics. Similarly, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu also opted out of the Olympics. This trio cited the sudden change in the playing surface which could lead to injuries as the reason behind their decision.
