Cricket match called off due to racial abuse from Man United and Rangers fans in Scotland

In a surprising development from the world of cricket, a match in Edinburgh, Scotland, got called off after alleged sexist, homophobic, and racial abuse of players from the Manchester United and the Rangers fans. The Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club claimed on social media platform X that their team were forced off the field after football fans assaulted two of the players before their match against the Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club.

The alleged abuse and assault happened at Roseburn Park before Manchester United played against Rangers in a pre-season friendly at the Murrayfield Stadium. The Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club stated the football fans engaged in incendiary things against their players when the police were standing just 50 yards away from them.

As per the Times of India, after the match, which was a part of the East of Scotland Cricket Association division seven, got called off, the Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club filed a complaint to the Scotland Police. They also spoke about working “tirelessly to make Roseburn Park a welcoming, all-inclusive venue for cricket.”

The BBC report stated the Scotland Police confirmed to them about making inquiries in the case, which was registered by the Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club.

The excerpts of the club statement about the matter on X read, “Very upset that our 4th team had to abandon their game today due to a combination of sexist, homophobic and racist abuse at Roseburn Park outside Murrayfield Stadium today against Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club. Not only that, there were two instances of physical assault that were perpetrated on players. The perpetrators of said abuse were fans of football clubs playing a friendly at the Murrayfield Stadium – and police were standing 50 yards away.”
