Lucknow SuperGiants owner Sanjiv Goenka has addressed the rumor regarding 50 crores INR reserved for Rohit Sharma. At this point, the mega auction rules regarding player retention are yet to be made official. During IPL 2024, a video went viral in which Sharma could be heard suggesting that this year’s tournament might be his last for MI. The right-hander, who announced his retirement from the shortest format after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, is yet to retire from the cash-rich league.
Also, with a lot of suspense around the retention at this point, there are rumors that the 37-year-old might switch teams for the 2025 season. This has led to another rumor surfacing that LSG has reserved ‘50 crores’ for the two-time T20 World Cup winner. However, team owner Sanjiv Goenka said that if they spend this much money on one player, it will be difficult to manage the rest of the squad.
“Do you even know if Rohit Sharma is entering the auction? This is all unnecessary. It all depends on whether Mumbai Indians release Rohit Sharma or not. And even if Rohit comes to auction… if you put 50 per cent of your purse on one player, how will you buy other play?” Goenka said.
Ro hit Sharma was removed from MI captaincy ahead of 2024 season
Ahead of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League, Sharma was removed from the captaincy role. He was replaced by Hardik Pandya, who wasn’t received well by the fans. Under the latter, MI finished last for the second time after 2022. During the 2024 season, the India all-rounder, Pandya was booed by the fans.
This led to a fear whether Pandya is mentally impacted by such behavior from the crowd ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. However, he bowled the last over of the final, defending 16 runs and taking two wickets. It will be interesting whether he continues to lead MI in the next season.
