Lionel Messi wins 46th career trophy as Inter Miami clinch MLS Supporters Shield

Argentine football great Lionel Messi won his 46th major career trophy as his side Inter Miami clinched the MLS Supporters Shield. The side took down Columbus Crew, the reigning MLS Cup champions with a scoreline of 3-2 to add another trophy to their cabinet. With the title, Messi solidified his position as the men’s football player with the most titles in history. During the clash, Messi scored twice. 

Notably, the silverware came as the first major trophy for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS) since debuting in 2020. They clinched the trophy with 68 points in 32 games as Miami managed to keep their counterparts at bay. Not only this, but apart from Messi, Luis Suarez also scored a goal just after the 63rd minute that helped the side win the game with three points. Apart from Messi’s goals towards the end of the first half and the penalty saved by goalkeeper Drake Callender in the 84th minute secured the win for the side. 

Lionel Messi makes comeback to Argentina’s squad for Key World Cup

Lionel Messi made a stylish comeback to his national side as his side is set to clash in the South American World Cup qualifying matches. The 2022 World Cup winning side will be up against Venezuela and Bolivia. Messi missed his recent matches because of an ankle injury. Notably, Messi had suffered an ankle injury in the Copa America 2024 final in a clash against Columbia. 

Coach Lionel Scaloni announced the squad on Wednesday for the matches against Venezuela on October 10. Notably, Argentina leads South American qualifying with 18 points, which is followed by Colombia with 16 points and Uruguay with 15 points. Here is Argentina’s squad for World Cup Qualifiers.
