The hosts of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh secured a long-awaited victory at the marquee tournament as they defeated Scotland by 16 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday, October 3. As it was Bangladesh’s first win in 10 years at the T20 World Cup, the emotions were quite visible after achieving this historic win.
In a moment filled with pure emotions, Bangladesh captain, Nigar Sultana broke down in tears as they beat Scotland. Sultana, who was featuring in her 100th T20I match, expressed pride in her team as they immersed in pure joy, ending their 10-year wait for a win in T20 World Cup.
Speaking after the side’s 16-run win against Scotland Women, emotional Nigar Sultan added that they had been waiting for this moment for a long time. “We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. We had it in our minds that this is our moment. Means a lot,” said the Bangladesh captain. “Building a partnership between Rani and Mostary was crucial for us. We had a good total, and we kept believing in ourselves. We have a very good spin attack, and Marufa also did well, so we were confident about defending the score,” she further added.
The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 was initially scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) moved the tournament to UAE amid the ongoing political situation. Highlighting this, the wicketkeeper-batter further added, “We’ve moved on from the heartbreak of not playing in front of our home crowd. We’re fortunate to be here, healthy, and representing our country.”
After opening the tournament with a win, Bangladesh will next take on England Women on Saturday, October 5 at 3:30 pm (IST) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah. The Nigar Sultana-led side are placed in Group B, alongside South Africa, England, West Indies, and Scotland.
