Luka Modric becomes oldest player ever to play for Real Madrid during 2-1 win over Celta Vigo

On Saturday, October 19, Luka Modric, the captain of Real Madrid, became the oldest player ever to play for the Galacticos during their 2-1 over Celta Vigo in La Liga. When the veteran midfielder, who was 39 years and 40 days old, got brought on as a substitute after the hour mark at the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos in Vigo, he broke the record of the oldest player ever to represent Real Madrid, which was held previously by the legendary Ference Puskas.

Within just three minutes into his arrival on the pitch for Real Madrid, Luka Modric provided an assist to Vinicius, who scored an impressive goal for his team in the 66th minute, which turned out to be the winner on the night. Earlier, in the first half, Kylian Mbappe gave Real Madrid the lead in the 20th minute, which was wiped out by a Williot Swedberg’s goal in the 51st minute for Celta Vigo.

I don’t like being reminded of my age, but this is truly incredible: Luka Modric

As of this writing, Real Madrid are level on points (24) with Barcelona in the La Liga, but trailing them on goal difference in the league standings. Moreover, their arch-rivals have a game in hand, their 10th league contest of the season, which is set to happen on Sunday evening, October 20, against Sevilla at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.

Moreover, Luka Modric is in the final year of his current contract with Real Madrid, and he will be celebrating his 40th birthday just three months before potentially leaving the Galacticos. After his record-breaking achievement for the Spanish giants, he remarked, as per Footboom, “Thank you very much, I don’t like being reminded of my age, but this is truly incredible. I am very proud to achieve this record and to still be at the best club in the world at my age. I am also proud of today’s victory.”

The Croatian also reflected on his time at Real Madrid, which has been filled with countless trophies and said, “It’s very difficult to choose just one thing; I have experienced so much here at Real Madrid. First, it was signing for the club, then winning Champions League titles and leagues, and now I have become the oldest player with the most titles. It’s tough to pick just one thing. I am very proud and happy to achieve all of this. We have to keep adding to it.”
