On This Day: Glenn Maxwell smashed fastest 100 in ODI World Cup history in 2023

The 2023 ODI World Cup was a memorable one for the Australian team as they lifted their sixth title in that edition. Along with that, it was also a campaign to remember for Australia’s all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. His iconic double ton against Afghanistan has already been etched in the history of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Before that, Maxwell achieved another milestone in a match against the Netherlands in Delhi on October 25, as he smashed the fastest century in the ODI World Cup history.

Glenn Maxwell surpassed South Africa’s Aiden Markram to score the fastest century in the ODI World Cup. Markram smashed a 49-ball century against Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi in the same World Cup edition on October 7, 2023. Just 18 days after  this knock, Maxwell smashed a century in just 40 balls at the same ground against the Netherlands as Australia registered a massive win.

Australia registered biggest victory by runs in ODI World Cup history

Along with Glenn Maxwell’s fastest hundred, Australia also registered the biggest victory in the history of the ODI World Cup by the margin of runs. Australia thrashed the Netherlands by a mammoth 309 runs in that game. Batting first, Australia posted 399/9, with David Warner scoring 104(93) runs, along with Maxwell’s fiery knock of 106(44) runs. Steve Smith (71 off 68) and Marnus Labuschagne (62 off 47) also scored half-centuries as Australia set a 400-run target for the Netherlands.

Coming to chase a mammoth target, Netherlands kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and were bowled out for just 90 runs in 21 overs. For Australia, Adam Zampa took a four-wickets haul, while Mitchell Marsh put two in his bag. On the other hand, skipper Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell scalped a wicket each as Australia registered a massive victory.
