Star Indian batter Rohit Sharma achieved milestone for the highest individual score in ODI cricket in a match against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 13, 2014. The opening batter has scored most double centuries in the 50-over format with his first double ton coming against Australia in Bengaluru in 2013. A year later, Rohit went on to smash his second double hundred and shattered several records with his fiery batting against the Lankans.
India already had the five-match ODI series to their name after winning the first three games consecutively. Talking about the fourth match, India decided to bat first after winning the toss against Sri Lanka. The hosts were looking to get a good start before Ajinkya Rahane (28 off 24) got out after the score of 40 runs in 7.5. After a few overs, Ambati Rayudu also lost his wicket as India were reduced to 59/2 in 13 overs. After that, Rohit Sharma and stand-in skipper Virat Kohli took charge of the innings.
Rohit Sharma smashed world-record 264 to set new ODI record
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli put up a partnership of 202 runs for third runout before Kohli got runout after scoring 66 runs off 64 balls hitting six boundaries. On the other hand, Rohit reached his second ODI double ton and became the first batter to reach the milestone of 250 by any batter in an ODI innings. The right-hander got out on the last of the innings after smashing 264 runs off 174, hitting 33 fours and nine sixes as India posted 404/5 and went on to win the match by 153 runs.
Three years after his iconic 264-run knock, Rohit Sharma went on to score his third double hundred in ODI cricket against the same opponent. The current Indian skipper has now most double centuries by any batter in ODI cricket, and also boasts a record for the highest-individual score in the 50-over format international cricket. Former New Zealand opener, Martin Guptill comes second in the list for his knock of 237*(223) runs against West Indies during the 2015 ODI World Cup.
