The Sunrisers Hyderabad finally snapped the Chennai hoodoo – and boy did they do it in style. After 12 long years with a single win at Chepauk, they finally walked away with a five-wicket win against the Chennai Super Kings. SRH fans? Elated. Meme pages? Already celebrating. But hang on a sec – can a struggling team make the playoffs? With just six points from nine games and a net run rate that is more of a hindrance than a statistic, the road ahead appears more thriller than rom-com. Let’s break down what has to happen for SRH to pull off a great escape.
The Math Behind the Mayhem: What SRH Needs to Qualify
Let’s address the obvious: SRH have to win at least four more times to reach 14 points, but 16 points is more likely to secure qualification than 14 points. So, ideally, they would need to win all five of their remaining matches. Difficult? Of course. Impossible? Not exactly.
If they are sitting at 14 points, that requires multiple teams to lose enough games that the cut-off for qualification dips lower. That’s scoreboard math’s that can only cause excitement or panic for fans. Contrarily, 16 points will almost guarantee them a playoff spot unless their net run rate (-1.103) knocks them out of contention. So, on to this major concern…
The NRR Problem
Net Run Rate. The three-letter acronym that haunts every team on the playoff bubble. SRH’s current NRR is -1.103, and this is, putting it nicely, not good. Only CSK is worse right now, with an even sadder -1.302.
What does that mean in practical terms? It means that even if SRH wins four of five going ahead, if those wins tend to be scrappy or low-margin wins, they could still find themselves on the outside looking in. So, this is not just a simple case of winning – they have to be winning big. They have to win matches by a larger number of wickets or in far fewer overs. They need to make statements with victories. Almost to say, not only are we winning, but we are winning big.
On the horizon in their next few games, and especially at home, SRH need to string together a series of clinical, one-sided performances. Winning games is one thing, and wins that provide close finishes are good for the fans, but neither will provide the NRR repair that they find themselves in.

Match-Ups, Mindset, and Momentum
The good news? Three of these five teams are equally inconsistent this season. The bad news? There is no room for error. The matches against GT and LSG are being played away, which SRH has struggled with throughout their history. But both are home games to be optimistic about, particularly against Delhi and Kolkata. That match against RCB on the 13th of May could be a playoff decider for both teams – that’s on a whole different level!
Mentality is going to be key. SRH has a lot of potential: Ishan Kishan is now looking somewhat reliable, Kamindu Mendis is a total wild-card, and Harshal Patel has suddenly become the X-factor bowler they were missing. If the leadership can sort out the combinations and ride the wave of confidence from this recent win, who knows?
However, imagining has never been enough. SRH will need to complete their next five games flawlessly, reach out to other teams for a favour, and pull something miraculous with their NRR before they can stay relevant in the playoffs.
What do you think? Can SRH be one of the great comeback stories in IPL 2025, or is it too little or too late? Share your thoughts and bold predictions in the comments below!
