Let’s face it, PBKS fans have seen it all. From rollercoaster thrillers to baffling losses, this side knows how to keep you on a hair trigger emotionally. Just when you think you can settle down a bit, their perplexing bowling dilemma has sent us spiraling. After acknowledging there was “rustiness” from the bowlers in Jaipur, Shreya Sai’s admission leads us to: should Punjab Kings turn it on its head and go with Xavier Bartlett or Kyle Jamieson? Let’s break it down as if we are having a chat with your cricket-obsessed friend over a chai.
Bartlett: The Powerplay Fix PBKS Desperately Needs?
Xavier Bartlett is more than just a name on the team list – he has been a new-ball weapon in the games he has played. Being able to swing a new ball upfront, and take early wickets can be a massive plus, particularly on flat tracks like Jaipur, where winning the powerplay can often mean the difference between an easy victory or brutal defeat.
Punjab’s main issue in recent times has not only been leaking runs, but of not being able to apply pressure early on. Bartlett’s tidy economy and skill of taking top-order batters make him a strong candidate. He also has the temperament to bowl at the death—he’s done it for Brisbane Heat in the BBL and has shown that he has some ice in his veins. In a line-up where Omarzai’s overs seemed a lot more hopeful than strategic, Bartlett provides clarity and confidence.
Of course, the downside? PBKS have batting depth for days—Harpreet Brar batting at 10 is good evidence that scoring runs isn’t the concern. Taking wickets is. Bartlett could be exactly the aggressive type of fix PBKS needs.
Jamieson: The X-Factor That Could Break the Pattern
This is where it gets interesting-Kyle Jamieson, the tall Kiwi who can send it steeply from awkward lengths. At 6’8″, he does not have express pace, but while he doesn’t bowl 85-90mph (135- 145kph), there is still bounce, variety, and a bit of unpredictability.
In T20s and especially on Indian pitches where skidders and clever seamers are favoured, Jamieson can pose a fresh challenge. He is not someone that batters can easily line up, and his bounce can disrupt even the most settled batters, especially in the middle overs.
Most significantly, his availability may allow PBKS to rotate their bowlers more intelligently. With Chahal returning to hopefully anchor the spin department, the combination of pace variance (Jamieson’s height and slower balls) could also relieve pressure off of part-timers like Stoinis and even Arshdeep.

Team Balance vs Risk: Is Now the Time for a Double Change?
The fifth-bowler combination, as it is right now, Stoinis and Omarzai, is failing. Omarzai has admittedly given some batting depth, but his bowling has simply not been useful at all. Omarzai has now become a luxury in PBKS’s squad instead of a third seam bowler. The fact of the matter is, if PBKS wants to take control of matches, they will need to move away from ‘safe’ selections.
The combination of a Bartlett-Jamieson double switch includes complementary strengths: the risk-taking element of Bartlett can go hard early, while Jamieson has a controllable middle over. With the reintroduction of Chahal, a new-look bowling attack could suddenly return to looking like a potential threat.
It’s time to give the decision-makers their moment to stop holding back and make the bold move. After all, the saying goes that fortune favours the brave, especially in a free-wheeling format like the IPL.
What do you think? Should PBKS risk a double change or keep the same approach and hope it works? Let us know in the comments.
