How West Indies’ ODI Shake-Up Against New Zealand Tests Squad Depth

The recent changes to the West Indies’ ODI team have left fans with a case of whiplash. A short period of time (a couple of weeks) has seen an incredible number of players come and go as part of the ODI team that will travel to New Zealand for their upcoming ODI series. The latest news? John Campbell is back. Campbell has not participated in an ODI since 2019; now it seems that he is the key player to help West Indies succeed in the ODI series against New Zealand in Christchurch. Brandon King was recently released from his ODI duties after having a poor T20I performance.

Campbell’s Recall: Experience vs. Rust

Recalling Campbell is a calculated gamble, as his last ODI was six years before this current series; however, having someone with Campbell’s level of experience would be invaluable given that our top order is struggling. According to statistics, Campbell averages just below 37 at the First Class level, and he has an excellent history of turning his early-season starts in Domestic Cricket into game-changing innings. New Zealand’s bowlers (while not necessarily fast bowling) will continue to torment and exploit their home advantage by utilizing the seam movement and line discipline that they have mastered at home. Campbell’s ability to play and/or get out to moving deliveries may either provide some stability for the West Indies’ batting lineup, or it may ultimately lead to another quick collapse.

Emerging Pace Options: Layne and Forde Under Spotlight

West Indies have had their best fast bowling options (frontline) injured and/or rested for this series. The focus, therefore, shifts to either untested pacer Johann Layne or returning from injury Matthew Forde. Layne is still new to Tests after making his Test debut against India; however, he has never faced an ODI where endurance, variation, and tactics will be tested. Forde has appeared in all 5 Twenty20 Internationals for West Indies and has experienced international pressure before; thus may offer a bit more stability as the first line of defense against New Zealand’s powerful opening batting lineup. New Zealand historically has exploited inexperienced bowlers early on; thus, it will be important how the bowlers are utilized by the coaching staff (in short bursts, at varying angles, with combinations of speed and cutters).

Shuffling the Middle Order: A Test for Balance

While Chase is an experienced player (his batting averages are about 35), he has been paired with two relatively inexperienced players, Shepherd and Springer. While they are multi-dimensional cricketers and provide West Indies with some additional options to attack and defend, there may be a need for Chase to take on even more of a leadership role as the team balances its attack style with defensive responsibilities. As mentioned earlier, New Zealand’s pitches favor long innings and thus, West Indies will need to find ways to maintain their aggressive nature while also preserving enough wickets to make it through 50 overs.

Injuries Dictate Strategy: Adapt or Perish

The West Indies are likely to use this series as an example of how adaptable squads can be. As they were unable to select from their top-four pace bowlers for this tour, they will rely heavily upon their players’ versatility; i.e., those who can bat, bowl, or field at a very high level. There is also a negative side to having versatile players: if inexperienced players are selected into the team, then experienced teams such as New Zealand may exploit them with a well-disciplined attack. Historically, the West Indies perform best overseas when they have leaders such as Shai Hope build innings and younger, talented players step up and perform. In addition to his captaincy duties, it would appear that Shai Hope has a strong chance of taking on some mentorship responsibilities as he guides the likes of Layne, Springer, and Forde through what may be a baptism by fire.
