5 Highest successful run chases in T20 history

The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 went into the history books, when Punjab Kings managed to chase down a 262-run target against Kolkata Knight Riders, the highest successful run chase in the T20 format. During the illustrious history of the shortest format of the game, the run chasing has become easier with each passing year, with the record for the highest run chase getting broken regularly.

Here are the five highest successful run chases in the history of T20 cricket.

5. Multan Sultans chasing 243 against Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2023

In the 2023 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Peshawar Zalmi scored 242/6, on the back of impressive fifties from Babar Azam (73 off 39) and Saim Ayub (58 off 33), at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. But Multan Sultans overhauled the target with five balls to spare, to win by four wickets after Riley Rossouw scored 121 off 58, an innings which included 12 fours and eight maximums.

4. Australia chasing 244 against New Zealand in 2018

At the Eden Park in Auckland, Martin Guptill notched up a hundred, scoring 105 off 54 with nine maximums, while Colin Munro got 76 off 33, both playing a key role in propelling New Zealand’s total to 243/6. Although, in the run chase, D’Arcy Short (76 off 44) and David Warner (59 off 24), provided a solid start to Australia, followed by quick-fire 30s from Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell proving enough for the visitors to register a five-wicket win with seven balls remaining.

3. Middlesex chasing 253 against Surrey in T20 Blast 2023

During the T20 Blast 2023, the opening batters for Surrey, Will Jacks (96 off 45) and Laurie Evans (85 off 37) played a significant role in helping their team to post 252/7 on the board at The Oval in London. In response, Middlesex top-order batted exceptionally well, especially Stephan Eskinazi (73 off 39) and Max Holden (68 off 35), to ensure that they chased down the target with four balls to spare, with seven wickets in hand.

2. South Africa chasing 259 against West Indies in 2023

West Indies posted a massive score of 258/5 against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, on the back of a great hundred from Johnson Charles, who finished his innings with 118 off 46, including 10 fours and 11 maximums. In the run chase, South Africa put the West Indies bowlers to the sword, with Quinton de Kock (100 off 44) and Reeza Hendricks (68 off 28) playing a key role at the top of the order, to help the team overhaul the target with seven balls to spare, winning by six wickets.

During the IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders batters went ballistic against Punjab Kings, with their openers Phil Salt (75 off 37) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32) scoring majority of runs in their 261/6 total at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The run chase from Punjab Kings had Jonny Bairstow batting right throughout the innings to score 108 off 48 with nine maximums, while Prabhsimran Singh scored 54 off 20 in the powerplay, and Shashank Singh stayed unbeaten on 68 off 28 with eight maximums, to make sure that the team got over the line with eight balls and eight wickets in hand.
