Following their top two finish in the Super 8 Group 2 of the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa and England are through to the semifinal stage of the tournament. They are now awaiting the top two teams from the Super 8 Group 1, expected to be India and Australia, to play against in the knockouts of the T20 World Cup.
Notably, South Africa got the better of the co-hosts West Indies by three wickets via the DLS method at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, to reach the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 with three straight wins in the Super 8 Group 2. England finished in second place in the standings after obliterating the USA by 10 wickets with 62 balls to spare at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The two other semifinalists, who will face either South Africa or England, will be determined from the final Super 8 Group 1 standings of the T20 World Cup 2024. Australia are scheduled to face India, while Afghanistan will take on Bangladesh, with everything at stake in the tournament.
If India goes on to defeat Australia, then they will not only confirm their place in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 but also play against England. But, in case Australia gets the better of India, and with a margin of 41 runs or more, then they will face England in the knockout match.
Afghanistan are also in with a chance to make the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 if they take down Bangladesh by a big margin following India’s win against Australia . In this particular case, Afghanistan, not Australia, will go up against South Africa in the next stage of the tournament.
All in all, there is a likelihood of any scenario playing out mathematically, but the most expected lineup for the semifinal stage of the T20 World Cup could be India versus England and South Africa versus Australia.
