On Wednesday, June 26, in the first semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa are scheduled to face Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad. There is a reserve day allotted to this highly anticipated match, which could be used in case of a wash out in Tarouba due to the inclement weather, but if the rain persists on back-to-back days, then the tournament will be turned upside down.
As per the ICC regulation for the T20 World Cup 2024, if there is not enough play possible to constitute a game due to rain on the scheduled day and the reserve day, then one of the tournament finalists from either South Africa or Afghanistan will be decided on the basis of the higher group standing from the Super 8 stage. Since South Africa finished on top of Group 2, to make the semifinal of the T20 World Cup, they will be advancing to the final instead of Afghanistan, who finished in second place in Group 1.
That’s why, Afghanistan will be hoping for the weather to stay clear in Tarouba on June 26, to give themselves the best chance of making the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating South Africa in the semifinal. Furthermore, if the rain interrupts play on the day, then it will resume on the reserve day from where it was left.
In the first semifinal, there is an extra 60 minutes allotted at the end of day’s play, while on the reserve day, there will be further 190 minutes.
However, there is no reserve day for the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 between India and England, at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. The ICC have allotted extra 250 minutes in order to complete the match if the rain interrupts play.
