Suryakumar Yadav’s childhood coach loses his job, asks Indian T20I captain for help

Childhood coach of Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, Ashok Aswalkar has lost his job at the BARC ground where he worked from 1989-90. Yadav replaced Rohit Sharma as the Indian captain in the shortest format after the Hitman retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. 

Post the World Cup win, SKY was named the Indian captain for the tour to Sri Lanka where the Men in Blue will play three T20Is and as many ODIs. But Yadav’s childhood coach,  Ashok Aswalkar has been put in a difficult situation by his employer recently.

The 61-year-old worked for over two decades as a coach and curator at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Ground in Chembur, Mumbai. But he was allegedly recently removed from his role where he earned Rs 41,000 per month. He is now coaching at an indoor turf for a massive pay cut.

Speaking about his situation, Aswalkar, as per Mid-day, said, “I joined the BARC [Bhabha Atomic Research Centre] ground in 1989-90 and was assisting Jagannath Phanse as a groundsman and coach. I started at a monthly salary of INR 3,000 and when they [ASMC] discontinued my services in December 2023, I was getting Rs 26,000 per month for the groundsman job and INR 15,000 for coaching from a coaching agency.”

Later in his interview,  Ashok Aswalkar also revealed that he spoke to Suryakumar Yadav about his job.  “I didn’t even tell my family members that I had lost my job. I just messaged Surya to say that I lost my job and told him who was responsible for this damage. Surya in response stopped entertaining that particular person,” Aswalkar added.
