Over the years, the sporting scenario has undergone a drastic change in India, and as we welcome the 78th Independence Day, it can be safely said that sports have become as important as once only education was. Over the years, India has produced several sporting legends, all thanks to the aid and support they have received from the Indian government. Owing to the schemes and developments that the Indian government has released, several programs that have proved to be a huge support to athletes who didn’t have strong financial backgrounds.

The National Sports Talent Contest Scheme (NSTC) is one of the most impactful schemes that the Indian government launched to support budding athletes. It is implemented to target sub-junior level trainees, and the primary function of the scheme was to identify talented players in the 8-16 years age group. It offers them grants and experienced coaches to nurture their talent. 

Sports Authority of India (SAI)

SAI has undoubtedly emerged as the architect of India’s sporting ambitions. The government body has played a key role in developing sports in the country. This apex body is responsible for implementing various sports schemes in India and over the years, it has designed holistic approach to improve the structure of sports throughout the nation. 

Fit India Movement

The Fit India Movement was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 29, 2019, on the seventh National Sports Day. With the initiative, PM Modi vowed to make fitness an integral part of day-to-day life. One of the aims of this initiative was to encourage indigenous sports among Indians. 

Khelo India

Another most impactful schemes of the Indian government for the development of sports at grassroot levels is Khelo India. The youth-focused scheme was launched in 2018 by the then Sports Minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore after collaboration of three schemes for sports training in India. The initiative received positive response from Indian citizens and now, it has reached all rural parts of the country. 

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan is a federally funded program that was launched on February 21, 2014. The program was introduced in place of the previous Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan and Panchayat Yuva Krida. The plan aimed to achieve several goals by building specialised blocks and sports complexes, whether indoors or outdoors.
