AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey urges West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to reinstate Durand Cup matches in Kolkata

All India Football Federation President (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey wrote to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, requesting her to reinstate the Durand Cup matches in Kolkata. The organisers of the tournament called off the Durand Cup derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on August 18 due to security concerns amid widespread protests. Notably, the development came after protests took place in the city following a trainee doctor’s rape and murder.

Reigning champions Mohun Bagan and East Bengal won’t also play their quarterfinal clashes at home. Mohun Bagan are set to be up against Punjab FC in the quarters in Jamshedpur on August 23, whereas East Bengal will face Shillong Lajong in Shillong. On Friday, the Salt Lake Stadium will host the Bengaluru FC vs Kerala Blasters quarterfinal match. The tournament officials are yet to make an announcement about the venue for the semis and final slated to take place on August 25, 27 and August 31, respectively at the Salt Lake.

AIFF Prez Kalyan Chaubey writes to Mamata Banerjee

On Wednesday, August 21, AIFF boss Kalyan Chaubey wrote to the WB CM Banerjee and requested that the matches should be held as decided. He wrote, “I have received numerous appeals from not just the supporters of participating teams but also football fans across the world requesting the reinstatement of the Durand Cup matches in Kolkata.”

He added, “In my capacity as the President of the AIFF, I earnestly urge your office to take all necessary steps and measures to ensure that the Durand Cup matches can be held in Kolkata as scheduled. As you are aware, the Durand Cup derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, scheduled for Sunday (18th August 2024), had to be called off due to intelligence inputs indicating potential violence at the venue.”

He further added, “Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal established in the years 1889 and 1920, respectively have rich histories and are synonymous with Kolkata’s identity and its passionate football culture.”
