Paralympic Games 2024 organisers postpone triathlon over water quality in River Seine

On Sunday, September 1, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games triathlon events were postponed after rising concerns over water quality in River Seine. The organisers concerned with the event at the Paralympic Games confirmed that the 11 para-triathlon events, which were eventually scheduled for Sunday, will now take place on Monday, September 2.

However, the organisers also added that it will be possible only if the water testing allows to organise the triathlons. “The latest analysis shows a deterioration in the water quality of the Seine following heavy rainfall over the past days,” the organisers said as quoted by AFP. “It was decided to schedule 11 medal sessions of the Para triathlon on September 2,” they added, after a meeting between World Triathlon, the Paris 2024 Paralympics organisers and the concerned French authorities.

It is to be noted that rainstorms hit the Frech capital on Friday as well as Saturday. Due to excessive rainfall, the wastewater and runoff went into the river, leading to rise in bacteria levels, including E. Coli.

During the Paris Olympics 2024, which took place from in July-August, also saw significant postponement in triathlon and water events which were scheduled to be held in River Seine. Several athletes also suffered infection due to poor water quality, while a few teams were forced to make last-minute changes.
