My performance has not matched my expectations: Shubman Gill’s honest take on Test career

Indian star batter Shubman Gill has given an honest take on his Test career and admitted that he has not been able to perform as per expectations. Gill, often considered as Indian cricket’s next big thing, made his debut in the longest-format late in 2020 during the away series against Australia. In 25 matches, the youngster has scored 1492 runs averaging at 35.52 and scored four hundreds and six fifties.

Gill, who started as an opener has now taken up the role of No.3, and followed the footsteps of Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara. The 24-year-old went through a form slump earlier in the year during the England series but later went on to score 2 hundreds and finished as the second-highest run-getter in the series with 452 runs in 5 matches.

The Gujarat Titans’ captain opened up on his Test performance and said that he has not been able to live up to his expectations. The batter told PTI that he is hoping that the forthcoming 10-Tests run against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia will help him improve his performance. Gill said, “I’ve not been up to my own expectations. But we have ten Tests coming up together. Hopefully, after these ten Tests end, I’ll be up to my expectations or more.”

The cricketer also talked about tackling defence against spinners and said that it was his main focus against England. Gill added, “I worked on my defence a little bit more especially against the spinners. Playing on turning tracks, you should be able to defend a lot more. Then you play scoring shots. With more T20 and playing on batting friendly tracks in the white ball, I feel it takes away a little from your defensive game over a period of time. So that was my focus during the England series.”
