There is a somewhat romantic quality to Najmul Hossain Shanto’s return as Bangladesh’s Test Captain; this, however, is more than just an act of nostalgia and rather an act of need. Just a few months back, Shanto had resigned as Captain of the test team due to the pressure of being a double captain (the other one was Liton Das), which he felt would cause him to lose focus on his game and potentially disrupt the team’s balance. Now, with Bangladesh ready to face off in a 2 match test series with Ireland, the board has quietly yet certainly restored Shanto as Captain.
Why? Because Bangladesh’s Test Identity has to be cohesive. While Shanto’s records do not shine brightly (four wins and nine losses, and one draw in fourteen tests), his intangible qualities speak louder; he has discipline, he is patient, and he remains extremely calm under pressure. His defining moment was when Bangladesh won a two-nil series against Pakistan in August 2024. A result that demonstrated a level of leadership and maturity in test cricket, which is too often an area of weakness for Bangladesh due to its lack of stability.
Stability Over Experimentation
The BCB’s decision indicates a paradigm shift: From rotational reaction to consistent stewardship of players. In the post-Mominul era, there was an endless cycle of changes at the top – Shakib’s sporadic captaincy, Miraz’s elevation as an ODI player, and Liton’s elevation as a T20 player. These constant changes may fit with the frenetic nature of white ball cricket, but Test Cricket requires patience – a quality Bangladesh has historically lacked.
Shanto’s reinstatement shows they now understand this fact. Shanto may not be the most charismatic of captains, but he is a very detail-oriented leader – his ability to lead will thrive in the longer form of the game, where the ability to make good judgments and maintain a level head are more important than having a flashy personality. It appears that the BCB understands that the path to consistency lies in the ability to create a culture of continuity rather than relying on personality.
Leadership in a Fragmented Setup
Shanto’s return to the Bangladesh test team also comes with an irony – in the same chaotic structure which caused Shanto to leave Bangladesh in the first place; today Bangladesh has three captains across different formats, which creates uncertainty and confusion rather than clarity for players, however in Test format; he is returning to a group of teammates who respect his leadership and authority.
BCB president Aminul Islam was not speaking of “growth” and “belief” as empty phrases – according to most accounts, the players in the Test squad reacted positively to Shanto’s leadership composure. Test cricket, after all, is based on trust. The top Test captains, such as Smith and Kohli, have been successful due to the fact that their teammates were willing to buy into their personality and temperament. Shanto does not possess this level of success yet; however, the fact that Bangladesh believes in his leadership composure is a bet on developing a positive long-term culture as opposed to short-term results.
The Challenge of the WTC Cycle
Shanto has a more than symbolic task ahead of him; with Bangladesh sitting at the bottom of the WTC standings at number 7, 4 points from 2 games, his job is to get Bangladesh back on track and make them a solid, hard-nosed Test team again. The Ireland series may not impact Bangladesh’s WTC standing; however, it does provide an opportunity for Bangladesh to regroup, test their bench, and regain some lost confidence before facing the tougher tests ahead.
The BCB will likely find out soon whether or not Shanto will be successful enough to continue producing positive results in the long term; however, what is obvious about the decision to bring him back as captain is that they want to make a steady process of growth, failure, and improvement. Bangladesh has taken many bold decisions within the white ball format of the game; this is one of the few times they have taken a cautious approach.
