Can Bangladesh still qualify for semifinals in the World Cup 2023? – Check Here

Bangladesh team have been the biggest disappointment in ODI World Cup 2023 with five losses in six games so far and they have almost been knocked out of the tournament unless a big miracle happens. Bangladesh, after winning their first game against Afghanistan, have lost five games consecutively to England, New Zealand, India, South Africa and the Netherlands, respectively.

Here, in this article, we will see if Bangladesh can still qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament even after losing five games in a row in this ODI World Cup.

The remaining schedule of Bangladesh in ODI World Cup 2023:

vs Pakistan in Kolkata, 31st Oct

vs Sri Lanka in Delhi, 6th Nov

vs Australia in Pune, 11th Nov

Current Points Table of ODI World Cup 2023:

South Africa – 5 wins (6 games)

India – 5 wins (5 games)

New Zealand – 4 wins (6 games)

Australia – 4 wins (6 games)

Sri Lanka – 2 wins (5 games)

Pakistan – 2 wins (6 games)

Afghanistan – 2 wins (5 games)

Netherlands – 2 wins (6 games)

Bangladesh – 1 win (6 games)

England – 1 win (5 games)

Note: Points Table updated till NED vs BAN (Match-28)

Now Bangladesh can end with a maximum of 4 wins in this ODI World Cup 2023 if they go on to win their remaining three games in the tournament.

If Bangladesh wins their remaining three games, then teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia will lose one more game.

Now, if we look at the top-4 sides already India and South Africa have more than 4 wins in the table while New Zealand and Australia have exactly 4 wins in the points table.

We assume New Zealand and Australia to lose all games so that they remain with only 4 wins in the points table.

– New Zealand will lose their remaining three games to South Africa, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and stay at only 4 wins in the points table.

– Australia will lose their remaining three games to England, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and stay at only 4 wins in the points table.

– Sri Lanka should lose three games in their remaining schedule. Sri Lanka can lose their next to three games to Afghanistan, India, and Bangladesh and defeat New Zealand alone to end with only 3 wins in the points table.

– Pakistan should lose two games in their remaining schedule. Pakistan can lose two of their remaining games to Bangladesh, and England and defeat New Zealand alone to end with only 3 wins in the points table.

– Afghanistan should lose three games in their remaining schedule. Afghanistan will beat Sri Lanka as per the above point, thus Afghanistan can lose their remaining games to sides like Netherlands, Australia and South Africa to stay with only 3 wins in the points table.

– England should lose two games in their remaining schedule. England will beat Australia and Pakistan as per the above points, thus England should lose to both India and Netherlands to stay with only 3 wins in the points table.

– The Netherlands should lose their final game against India by a big margin (NRR takes a big hit) and still they will end with 4 wins in the points table.

If all these happen then India, South Africa, and two teams (Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Netherlands) will qualify for the semi-finals based on NRR.

Bangladesh should ensure that their NRR is better than other sides like the Netherlands and one of Australia (or) New Zealand to enter the semi-finals in ODI WC 2023.
