Euro 2024 Qualifier: Belgium vs Sweden abandoned after Swedish fans shot dead

The Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was abandoned on Monday night after two Swedish fans were shot dead in Brussels ahead of the game. The victims were wearing Swedish shirts and were killed in the streets of the Belgian capital as reported by several Belgian media outlets.

Both teams were levelled at 1-1 at the end of half-time, however, the game was abandoned 30 minutes after half-time. An announcement was made that the players would not continue the match and the fans were asked to remain inside the King Baudouin stadium in the Belgian capital.

“Due to the incidents in Brussels earlier tonight, play is suspended.¬† Our thoughts are with all those affected,” wrote Belgium’s official account on X.

“Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned,” the UEFA stated on its website.

The Swedish FA also released a statement on X that read, “We will return when the Belgian authorities provide us with new information. Keep calm and take care of each other. Our thoughts go out to all the relatives of those affected in Brussels.”

Talking about the game, Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring for Sweden while Romelu Lukakau converted a penalty to equalise the game in the first half.
