Earlier, visiting captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and invited the Indians to bat first. It seemed like the Islanders gained some confidence in the beginning as they dismissed the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for four runs on two balls. However, the rest of the batting unit came together and compensated for their early loss.

Though the Indians displayed brilliant batting effort, it was quite an unlucky day for them in terms of centuries. India’s star batter Virat Kohli fell short of 12 runs from completing his 49th ODI hundred, behind opener Shubman Gill got dismissed when he was just eight runs away from another ton. Shreyas Iyer, who announced his comeback in the tournament with his fiery batting today, was on the list of the aforementioned batters as he was dismissed on 82.

The Indian bowlers were in their best form today and began the second inning by dismissing Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka on the first ball. Mohammed Siraj’s three-wicket haul and Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul took the fans back to the Asia Cup 2023 final.

Delivering an exceptionally good performance in yet another clash of the tournament, the hosts recorded an impressive 302-run win over their counterparts. With this win, Sharma and Co. reclaimed their first spot in the standings.
