The 2019 runners-up, New Zealand are in their prime form having won all three games so far at the ODI World Cup in India. The Kane Williamson-led side, who beat reigning champions, England by nine wickets, later won against Netherlands and Bangladesh to sit firm at the top spot in the point table.

However, Kane Williamson, who made his first appearance in the ODI World Cup 2023 in match against Bangladesh on October 13, suffered a horrific blow on his left thumb. The New Zealand veteran, who scored 78 during his stay in the middle was forced to return to the pavilion retiring himself.

While this incident unfolded in the 38 th  inning of the Kiwi inning, an X ray on Saturday, October 14 confirmed an undisplaced fracture. The New Zealand Cricket Board, BlackCaps in a post said, “an x-ray has confirmed an undisplaced fracture to Kane Williamson’s left thumb. He will remain in the @cricketworldcup squad with the aim of being available for the back end of pool play next month.”

However, the Kiwis have called in Tom Bundell as his cover for the remainder of the tournament. “Tom Bundell will travel to India as cover,” BlackCaps wrote.  

However, it continues to remain unknown whether Williamson will feature in his side’s next match as they take on Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 18.
