KL Rahul opens up on his ‘difficult period’; shares how injury and criticism made things worse

Indian wicketkeeping-batter KL Rahul opened up on his difficult times and revealed how constant backlash and IPL injury made things worse for him. Rahul delivered a sensational performance in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 opener against Australia on October 8, Sunday. The 31-year-old played an instrumental inning of 97* runs and finished the match with a six to give India their first win of the tournament. 

The Mangalore-born cricketer was in a conversation with Star Sports, where he revealed how constant criticism and backlash despite decent performances troubled him. Not only this, but the batter also opened up on the struggle after getting injured in the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League which kept him out of action for a few months.

 Rahul said, “There was a time when I was getting a lock of criticism in spite of giving decent performances. It was a difficult period for me. I went through a tough phase when I got injured during the IPL and I was out for 4-5 months. Playing the World Cup at that time was not a certainty.”

World Cup was my motivation to come back: KL Rahul

The India cricketer spoke about his motivation during the time and said that the marquee ICC tournament was his only motivation to fight and come back. Speaking up on it, he said, “Being a cricketer I have had faced a lot of injuries and I knew how to deal with it. So, I was very positive all the time. My biggest motivation was to play World Cup at home. I used to think that I have to come back for the World Cup and be a part of this squad.”
