India’s one of the most reliable fast bowlers Mohammed Shami announced his ODI World Cup 2023 arrival in class. Shami sent Will Young back to the hut on the first ball of his spell. The hosts for the 2023 season of ICC event, India, locked horns with 2015 and 2019 finalists New Zealand in the 21st clash of the competition, on October 22, Sunday at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited rival stand-in captain Tom Latham and side to bat first.

The ninth over of the first innings marked Shami’s first over in the 2023 season of the World Cup, and as classy as it could get, the 33-year-old picked his first wicket on the first ball. Young got his return call with a score of 17 runs off 27 balls after getting clean bowled from the Indian fast bowler.

Meanwhile, Shami went on to pick a few more wickets as he dismissed Rachin Ravindra on 75 (87) Mitchell Santner on 1 (2) and picked Matt Henry’s wicket for a duck on the very next ball. In addition to this, Shami brought Daryl Mitchell’s 130-run inning to an end and became the only Indian bowler to take two five-wicket haul in ODI World Cup. 

Earlier during the toss, Sharma said, “We’ll bowl first. No reason, we were here training yesterday and felt a bit of dew comes in. Looks like a good pitch, we’ll back ourselves to chase.  Quite important to keep the momentum going, forget what happened in the past. Need to be at it all the time.” 

Sharma added, “This is one place everyone wants to come and play, beautiful weather and nice stadium. Hardik isn’t available, so even Shardul misses out. We’ve got Shami and Surya coming in.”
