NZ vs AFG CWC 2023 Highlights: Phillips and Santner help New Zealand register 149-run win over Afghanistan

New Zealand completed their fourth straight win in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 after defeating Afghanistan by 149 runs in Chennai. Batting first, the Kiwis had a shaky start with Devon Conway getting out early. But a few dropped catches helped the Kiwi crawl back with Will Young (54) and Rachin Ravindra (32) stitching up a crucial partnership.

But as this partnership was dismissed the 2019 finalists were once again under pressure. Here, captain Tom Lathan partnering up with Glenn Phillips resurrected the innings. Latham scored a steady 68 in 74 balls while Phillips smashed 71 in 80 with four fours and four sixes.

Afghanistan still looked to manage a strong finish but multiple dropped catches and a 25-run cameo by Mark Chapman, helped New Zealand post a massive 288-run total. The Kiwis continued this momentum in the second innings and the fast bowlers – Trent Boult and Matt Henry gave them quick wickets.

Despite a few runs from  Rahmat Shah and  Azmatullah Omarzai, New Zealand got back into the fixture with  Mitchell Santner and  Lockie Ferguson ran through the remainder of the batting. The duo picked up three wickets each and helped the Kiwis register another big win.
