Ahead of the World Cup, Stokes took back his retirement from the 50-over format and returned to the England ODI squad for the series against New Zealand. He announced his return with a half-century and an incredible 189 at the Kennington Oval near London. But coming to India, Stokes hasn’t made a single appearance in the World Cup.

England captain Jos Buttler addressed Stokes’ health before the Three Lions’ second game against Bangladesh and revealed has been recovering well.  As quoted by the BCC, Buttler shared Ben Stokes has been “progressing well… he is doing more and more each day and seems to be improving, so it is good signs.”

Similarly, England’s head coach Matthew Mott gave an update on Stokes, saying the team is “confident” he would play against the Proteas. “We’ve obviously been relatively conservative with him, but the medical staff were always confident that South Africa was a game we could target,” Mott said on Tuesday. “I haven’t had a report on him in the last 24 hours, but before that, he was on target.
