Pakistan World Cup Qualification Scenario | How Can Pakistan Qualify For Semi Finals

Pakistan after winning their first two games of ODI World Cup 2023 against Netherlands and Sri Lanka have lost three games in a row to sides like India, Australia and Afghanistan respectively. Hence, they are on verge of missing out a semi-finals spot once again in this World Cup edition. However,  Pakistan’s loss against Afghanistan have put a huge pressure on them as lot was expected out of them.

Here in this article, we will have a look on how they can still qualify for semi-finals of ODI WC 2023.

Remaining schedule of Pakistan in ODI World Cup 2023:

vs South Africa in Chennai, 27th Oct

vs Bangladesh in Kolkata, 31st Oct

vs New Zealand in Bengaluru, 4th Nov

vs England in Kolkata, 11th Nov

Current points table of ODI World Cup 2023:

India – 5 wins (5 games)

South Africa – 4 wins (5 games)

New Zealand – 4 wins (5 games)

Australia – 3 wins (5 games)

Pakistan – 2 wins (5 games)

Afghanistan – 2 wins (5 games)

Sri Lanka – 1 win (4 games)

England – 1 win (4 games)

Bangladesh – 1 win (5 games)

Netherlands – 1 win (5 games)

Note: Points table updated till AUS vs NED game (Match 24)

Now Pakistan can end with a maximum of 6 wins in this ODI World Cup 2023 if they go onto win their remaining four games in this tournament.

If Pakistan wins their remaining four games, then teams like South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand and England will lose one more game.

Teams like Netherlands, Bangladesh already have four losses, hence Pakistan would be above these two sides in the points table if they go onto win their remaining games.

England will also lose four games as they already have three losses and losing to Pakistan will make it four, hence Pakistan will be above England as well.

Now, we want three more sides apart from Netherlands, Bangladesh and England to lose four (or) more games so that Pakistan qualifies for semi-finals provided they win all their remaining games.

Looking at table, it will be easier to knock-out sides like Sri Lanka and Afghanistan as they already have three losses in the table. Sri Lanka will face Afghanistan in Pune on 30th October, hence loser of this game will lose four games in total.

Winner of Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan game in ODI WC 2023 should lose one more game in their remaining schedule and if it happens, then both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will go below Pakistan with four losses in points table.

Now if we look at top 4 sides, Australia should lose two more games (or) either one among the England or New Zealand should lose three more games in total (or) India should lose all their remaining games.

For Pakistan to qualify for the semi-finals smoothly, either one of the four mentioned points should happen:

– Australia should lose two of their remaining games against sides like New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, Bangladesh.

– New Zealand should lose two of their remaining games against sides like Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka.

– South Africa should lose two of their remaining games against sides like New Zealand, India, Afghanistan.

– India should lose all their remaining games to England, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Netherlands.

If all the above points happen, then Pakistan will be above sides like Netherlands, Bangladesh, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and one of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India. Hence, they will qualify for semi-finals of ODI WC 2023.
