Sandro Tonali to receive 10-month ban over Italian football betting scandal

Italy and Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will receive a 10-month ban after being found guilty in a betting scandal alongside fellow Italian midfielder Nicoló Fagioli. Tonali had admitted to placing bets on Brescia and AC Milan as a player. After the verdict, Tonali’s legal team have been negotiating about the duration of the ban which will be confirmed in the coming hours, with all parties keen to finalise proceedings.

The development was confirmed by veteran football journalist Fabrizio Romano, who shared that Tonali will be missing about 10 months of footballing action for his role in the scandal. Further, the Italian journalist confirmed that Sandro Tonali and Nicoló Fagioli will go through a gambling rehab programme which supersedes the 10-month ban.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted, “Sandro Tonali will be banned for 10 month — sources confirm final indications, waiting on statement. He won’t be able to play for 10 months due to gambling addition scandal. There will be additional months of participation in gambling rehab plan, same as Nicoló Fagioli.”

Amidst these charges, Newcastle have reportedly threatened AC Milan with legal action over the Tonali gambling scandal. Magpies are set to launch a multimillion-euro lawsuit against Milan when Tonali’s ban comes into effect as per the Italian media as the British club has been furious about their €70m star being sidelined for the rest of the season.
