Uber Cup 2024: India defeat Singapore 4-1 in second Group A tie

On Sunday, April 28, the Indian women’s badminton team defeated Singapore 4-1 in their second Group A tie to get a step closer to making it through to the Uber Cup 2024 quarter-finals stage in Chengdu, China. After Ashmita Chaliha lost the first match of the tie, the rest of the Indian players were exceptional in their respective matches to take India over the line in a comfortable manner at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium.

The second Group A tie didn’t start on a bright note for Team India after Ashmita Chaliha succumbed to a loss against the world number 18, Yeo Jia Min, in straight games 15-21, 18-21. But, they bounced back strongly with the doubles pairing of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra taking down Xiao En Heng and Jin Yu Jia 21-15, 21-16.

Isharani Baruah put India in a 2-1 lead over Singapore after getting the better of Insyirah Khan of Singapore 21-13, 21-16. In the next match, India sealed the tie 3-1 when Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker pairing defeated Yi Ting Elsa Lai and Zan Michelle 21-8, 21-11.

The exclamation point in the second Group A tie came from Anmol Kharb, who won against Lee Xin Yi Megan 21-15, 21-13, to ensure a 4-1 victory for the Indian women’s badminton team. Notably, they will be playing against China on Tuesday, April 30, in the marquee clash of Group A in the Uber Cup.
