Wankhede turns blue to support ICC-Unicef campaign for children during IND vs SL CWC’23

Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where India lifted the coveted World Cup trophy in 2011 after a gap of 28 years, turned blue to support a UNICEF campaign. The iconic stadium hosted India’s clash with Sri Lanka in CWC’23 on November 2, 2023, and extended support to the ICC and UNICEF’s campaign dedicated to children. The BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket joined hands with the UN body that works for children, UNICEF, to release a new campaign “One Day 4 Children”.

The initiative is a part of the #BeAChampion campaign and shares the message of hope and support for every child to survive and thrive. The campaign aims to build a better future for children and create equal opportunities for both boys and girls.

Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar was present during the blue-lighting show, where fans turned on their blue-led wristbands as a gesture of extending their support to the campaign. The lighting show took place during the second inning of the game.

Earlier, the former cricketer had told ICC, “Every international cricketer, including myself, started as a child with a dream. I look forward to joining hands with UNICEF to see my home ground at the Wankhede Stadium turn blue as we champion equality for children across the world.”

Coming back to the match, India defeated their rivals by a huge margin of 302 runs to extend their win streak in the tournament to 7-0. With their win, the Asian Giants became the first to secure their berth in the semifinal stage of the season.
