The first regular season game between Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs was built around the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama, the forward of France. But, while the 19-year-old played limited minutes for the Spurs in the contest, scoring 15 points with five rebounds and two assists, it was Dereck Lively II, 19, the backup center for the Mavs, who stole the spotlight with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and an assist.

Luka Doncic was the best player on show at the Frost Bank Arena, putting together a 33-point game with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. His fellow guard Kyrie Irving was brilliant in the support cast, bringing up 22 points with two rebounds and six assists.
