The batting innings for the Afghans started on a bright note, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran stitching together a 114-run opening stand. Adil Rashid picked up the first wicket for England, getting rid of Ibrahim Zadran for 28 off 48, before scalping for Rahmat Shah for 3 off 8, to bring his team back into the contest.

Shortly afterward, the run out of the high flying Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 80 off 57, with eight fours and four maximums, put Afghanistan on the backfoot. Ikram Alikhil, the wicketkeeper, who was drafted into the side, took the responsibility in the second half of the innings, bringing up a fifty, to help propel their total to 284 all out.
