PV Sindhu defeats Kirsty Gilmour in opener; advances to Round of 16   

Indian ace PV Sindhu secured her first victory at Denmark Open 2023 as she defeated Scottish shuttler Kirsty Gilmour in Odense, Denmark, on October 17, Tuesday. The two-time Olympic medallist, who made it to the semi-finals of Arctic Open 2023 last week, took down her rival with a scoreline of 21-14, 18-21, 21-10 in the women’s singles opener. 

The ongoing BWF Super 750 event in Denmark offers Sindhu an opportunity to claim her first BWF World Tour title of the year. The Indian may face former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan or Indonesian seventh-seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the next round.

Rajnath Singh announces cash prizes for Asian Games defence personnel medallists 

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced hefty cash prizes for the defence personnels who won medals at the 19th Asian Games, Hangzhou. He said that an amount of INR 25 Lakh would be given to the gold medal winners and silver medal winners would get INR 15 Lakh. The bronze medal winners will get INR 10 Lakh. Singh was addressing the felicitation ceremony of the defence services medal winners. 

International Olympic Committee election to increase women representation

The elections of the International Olympic Committee elected eight new members, with four women and four men set to join the committee. With the election, the new strength of the global sports umbrella body rose to 107, as the 141st session came to an end on Tuesday, October 17. IOC released a statement and addressed the increasing number of women representatives and said, “This is in keeping with the IOC’s ambition to lead by example and increase female representation in governance structures.”

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho who was on his two-day visit to the City of Joy, Kolkata had a joyful day. The city has hosted several football legends, including Diego Maradona, Pele and Lionel Messi, and had a different atmosphere altogether hosting the Brazilian. The 43-year-old inaugurated a football academy at Rajarhat near Kolkata. The R10 Academy will train young footballers under a course designed by Ronaldinho. Not only this, but he also inaugurated a few Durga Puja Pandals. 

Angel Di Maria set to retire from Argentina football team after 2024 Copa America 

Argentine footballer Angel Di Maria announced his plans to draw curtains on his career with the national side after the 2024 Copa America on October 17, Tuesday. The World Cup winner isn’t a part of Argentina squad for this week’s CONMEBOL qualifiers due to an injury. Maria played a crucial role in Argentina’s win in the Copa America 2021 and World Cup 2022, where they defeated Brazil and France, respectively. He has received 134 international caps thus far, where he scored 29 goals.

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek shared a special message for compatriot Hubert Hurkacz for Shanghai Masters win. The 26-year-old lifted his second Masters title on Sunday after beating Andrey Rublev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8) in the Shanghai Masters final. 

After his win, Hurkacz shared a special message for fans on his social media and wrote, “Shanghai. This one feels special. This season hasn’t been easy but I never stopped believing. Thanks to my family, my team and everyone cheering in the crowds and on tv. Well done Andrey on a great tournament! Thank you Shanghai.” 

Swiatek reshared this message and reacted to it in Polish by writing, “Great job, Hubi! Huge congratulations.”

He is the biggest contender to win ATP Finals: Alex Corretja on Novak Djokovic

Alex Corretja thinks that Novak Djokovic is the biggest contender to win the ATP Finals, despite him not playing enough tennis before the tournament. The ATP Finals 2023 are scheduled to commence on November 12, and the tournament known as the year-end championship, will be held at the hard courts of Turin, Italy.

Corretja said, “I think he should be really one of the biggest contenders or the biggest contender to win, for sure, the ATP Finals. Novak is a master of the calendar because he knows exactly what he needs to do in every moment. But in order to do that, you need to know your body, you need to know your game. You need to know exactly where is your peak, at which moment. So, I think Novak does that very well.”

Disney F1 documentary of Brawn GP featuring Keanu Reeves to release on November 15

A Formula 1 documentary based on the Brawn Grand Prix’s 2009 season is set to be released globally on November 15. The documentary will be narrated by the Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves, and will be out in four parts, titled as Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story. The F1 docu-series will be out on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the USA. 

Apart from being the narrator, the actor has also been credited as the executive producer of the upcoming docuseries, which goes behind the scenes with ‘understaffed, underfinanced and independent team’. The team somehow beat all the odds to win the F1 world championship with both car and driver in 2009. The Brawn GP was a late addition to the grid, when Honda decided to opt out.
