France, Portugal, Belgium secure qualification for UEFA Euro 2024

On Friday, October 13, France, Portugal, and Belgium secured qualification in the UEFA Euro 2024, which will be played in Germany from June 14 to July 14 next summer. In the qualifying round of matches for the Euros, France got the better of Netherlands by 2-1 in Group B, Belgium defeated Austria by 3-2 in Group F, and Portugal managed to beat Slovakia by 3-2. 

Gareth Southgate questions fans for booing Jordan Henderson during international friendly

When the captain of England, Jordan Henderson was substituted in the 62nd minute of their international friendly against Australia at the Wembley Stadium in London, he was booed by a section of the fans, which made his manager Gareth Southgate questioning them. The 33-year-old has been embroiled in significant controversy ever since he made his move from Liverpool to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittifaq, to join his former teammate, the manager Steven Gerrard.

Daniel Sturridge denies owing $30,000 reward in dispute over his lost dog

The former England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has denied owing a $30,000 reward, in a dispute over his lost dog in 2019 in Los Angeles, instructing the lawyers to act on his behalf. The 34-year-old had offered the reward before he was reunited with his pet, which led to American rapper Foster Washington reportedly launching a civil suit against him recently with a claim that he is owed that money as per the court order, while stating that an arrest warrant for the footballer has been issued.

Manchester United ready to accept offers for Anthony Martial in January: Reports

Manchester United are reportedly ready to accept offers in January for Anthony Martial, one of the longest serving players at the club, whose current contract is set to run out at the end of the 2023-24 season. Although the Red Devils have the option to extend the 27-year-old’s current contract by a further 12 months, he isn’t willing to continue at the club in the backup role, after the arrival of the new striker Rasmus Hojlund.

PV Sindhu suffers semi-final defeat at Arctic Open 2023

Indian badminton icon PV Sindhu failed to make it to the finale of the Arctic Open 2023 on October 14, Saturday. The two-time Olympic medallist slumped to her Chinese opponent Wang Zhi Yi 12-21, 21-11, 7-21 at the Vantaa Energia Areena in Finland. 

India ended their campaign at the ongoing event ended as she was the only Indian left in the Super 500 event after Kiran George, Kidambi Srikanth, Aakarshi Kashyap and Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto made their respective last-16 exits on earlier on Thursday. 

It will take another four to five years to get another women’s singles player: Saina Nehwal

Indian veteran shuttler Saina Nehwal said that it will take another four-five years to get another women’s singles player who will match the calibre of herself and PV Sindhu. Notably, Sindhu is the only Indian player who is currently in the top 20 of the world rankings. 

The 2012 Olympic medallist was in conversation with Times of India, where she said, “There is a jameen-asmaan difference between Sindhu, myself and the present lot. I think it will take another four to five years to get another women’s singles player of that calibre.”


Compound archery fails to get IOC’s approval for LA Olympics 

Compound archery failed to make it to the list of International Olympic Committee’s list of approved sports for the 2028 edition of the Olympics. In June 2022, World Archery had proposed to the IOC for the inclusion of compound archery for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

On the occasion, the IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said, “Regarding the disciplines, the programme commission set that very framework. The President outlined no new venues, no additional quota, and new disciplines only where they were a replacement or swap for existing events or disciplines. That is why coastal rowing is the only additional new discipline because of the replacement of the lightweight rowing.” 


Anand Mahindra offers gift to Asian Games medallist Ram Baboo 

Indian business tycoon Ananad Mahindra offered the 2023 Asian Games medallist Ram Baboo a vehicle of his choice. Ram Baboo won a bronze medal for India in the 35 km race-walking event in the recently concluded tournament. Baboo worked as a labourer and waiter to finance his training. 

Inspired by his story, the Mahindra Group Chairman offered Baboo a vehicle of his choice. Mahindra tweeted, “Daily wage worker to Asian Games Medallist. Unstoppable courage & determination. Please give me his contact number I’d like to support his family by giving them any tractor or pickup truck of ours they want.”

Neeraj Chopra to appear on day 3 of BGIS Grand Finals 2023

Indian Olympic gold medallist and world champion Neeraj Chopra will appear as a guest on the third day of the BGIS Grand Finals 2023. Day three of the Battlegrounds Mobile India Series 2023 will take place on October 15, Sunday. 

Krafton India took to social media to make the special announcement and wrote, “Mr. Neeraj Chopra, the first Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in javelin and the first Asian to win gold at the World Champions will join us on Day 3 of the #BGIS2023 Grand Finals for the Final Battle.”
